Affiliate Internet Marketing: Are All Copy-Writers Shameless?

Why do I have the feeling that I am going to live to regret writing and publishing this article? Two things, I have to admit, one is that as far as affiliate Internet marketing goes, I have lost my objectivity. What I mean by that, is a year or so ago, I would not have even ready some of the hype that I have now read most of from start to finish. “How to Make $99,871.00 per Week, Working 2.8 Minutes per Day.” “This System Never Fails, Only the People Who Buy it Do.” I don’t think that is an exact quote. I think this is what they call aggressive internet marketing.

Like I said, are these Copy-Writers shameless. I read an eBook about a year ago by a famous real estate investment author that chronicles every step he made to accomplishes what he says is making $100,000 in 24 hours online or something like that. After sending out several emails saying things like, “You have to be here Wednesday night, when we reveal our special once in a life time supper extreme mega mania secret offer that you will only hear about if you are sitting at your computer ready to read the email prior to the 15 min self destruct sequence which timer begins upon pressing the send button on my computer.”

Did I mention that he had all the people send in their social security numbers prior to sending out any offers with a financial summary of available cash and estimated non collateral dept availability? He wanted to make sure the offers did not leave any money in the wrong hands…lol
The main point I had against this particular book was that he tells you what his total sales were, but he seems to forget, that he was going to have to pay for all of the seminars and other bonuses that he threw in but had still not even arranged. Last I heard, it still coast a lot of money to get a space, book speakers, and all the things that are required to put on a seminar.

I guess I can’t be too cynical about all of this; it really is no different than the rags of gossip being sold at the checkout line at the super market. The reason they are there, is because lots and lots of people buy them. I guess the difference is that what they write in the gossip columns is at least plausible, unlike the ads for affiliate Internet marketing.

What about this one, does anyone really think they are only going to sell 57 of these at this price? If so, does any of those people really believe that the 57 crossed out with the number 19 next to it is really how many sold since they read the first page? I was pretty sure it had to be true, until one time my computer suddenly shut down in the middle of the process, and when I finally got to my friends computer the next day and pulled up the offer so I could still try and get it, the ad still said only 57 and the second page still said 19???

The reason that I say I am probably going to regret writing this is, before I had my Son, I was one of those people that said, “When I have children, I am never going to…” I can say with full discloser, that everything I said to finish that sentence, I have not only done that with my own son, but probably a lot worse. Yes, after I gave him his first McDonalds French Fries, he refused to ever eat a green vegetable again. What is in those things?
My point is, I am sure it won’t be long before, I will have an offer for my list that is exclusive and limited in number or some other artificial circumstance to create a sense of urgency. But for now, I am still on the side of the parent who says, “I would never let my kid… when I have them.”

Exercise in Futility, or Legitimate Measure of Progress?

I was listening to Armand Morin on an audio a few days ago from the founder of Generatorsoftware.com. In this review of his new affiliate program, he was talking about a contest that he had put together for his affiliates to reward the one that had the greatest sales of his products or services. He was saying that there was no clear leader, and that anyone that was willing to put forth a major effort, could still win this thing.

Then he started to talk about what kinds of things a person could do that would still give them a chance. What I like best about what he said is after a moment reflection, he said, “Here are the things I use.”

Now, in my mind, those are magic words. I might have been doing ten thing at one time like I usually do when I listen to audios, but when someone that is making a lot more money than me opens up and shares the top things that they are currently using to build their business, suddenly, I am sitting up straight at the front of the class, note pad an digital recorder ready to go.

So, here is what he said he would do. First he said that he would send out multiple emails to his list, internet email marketing. That to me was a given, but I like hearing it because it just confirms to me that as long as I am building my list, I am on track.

The next thing he said he would do is multiple mailing to other ezine owners lists, another type of internet email marketing. I personally have only done this once, and had OK results. Believe me, OK results means that I got results, which means that this actually worked unlike most of the things I try. This is a way to use someone else’s ezine to publish articles.

In case you don’t know, when you subscribe to a news letter, or sometimes called an ezine, this means you want to receive information from the author so it is not spam. One of the things that ezine owner do is sell ads. These ads can come in several forms, such as a link on the regularly published ezine, or you can pay to have your message emailed to the ezine owners list. This is called a solo add. I believe that Stone Evens says this is the preferred method. You can find lists of these in ezine directories.

Again, Armand Morin said this is one of his personal methods of marketing, so I want to share with you two things that he thought were important enough to mention. First, that not all lists are created equal. That means, that if the subscriber don’t hold a high value to their subscription, odds are you are not going to get as good of results from your add to them.

The main point he was making here is that you use links that give you the ability to track your response to your offer, or see how many new subscribers you get to your list. This way, you may go through a few ezines before you find 4 or 5 that really pull good results for you. This keeps you from using ones that you pick randomly, and never get very good results from over and over.

Simply put, you would rather do a little tracking and find 5 lists that you are getting a 10% or higher response from, that just pick 5 and not know it but only get 0%, 3%, .09%, 6% and 1%. If each list had 100 people, this would mean the difference between having a response of 50 people and knowing you can expect that, or getting a response of 11 people and being oblivious.

Next article, I will share with you something that he shared about using blogs, and why he doesn’t use Google’s blogspot.com. I tried what he said, by posting two new articles on a blog that I created as per his instructions, and got a first page listing on a Google search in 5 days. I was amazed.

Who am I? Discovering Your Own Voice Online

For the longest time, I went from one affiliate program to the next.   I would buy one course from one of the presenters at a show, and I would by another one before the day was out, and then I would order some audios online that night in the hotel room.  There is no doubt that I was learning a lot, but unapplied knowledge is a quick way to run up your credit cards and start to feel a lot of pressure and frustration.

Finally, I took the advice of one of my favorite Internet Millionaires and picked one of the top selling products on click bank and decided to start to market it with the methods I was dying to put to use after just under 2 years researching the Internet.  I redirected one of my URL’s so potential customers would not be able to modify my affiliate links and cut me out of potential sales.  It took a little while, but after about two weeks, I was able to direct just over 2000 visitors to my affiliate link.

I am sure that most of you can see the error in my ways at this point, after spending my time and money trying to drive traffic to my affiliate site; I had nothing to show for it.  I was no further along that I had been two or three weeks prior to that point.  I do want to say though, that even if you are starting out as misguided as this effort was, it is better to start something than to not do anything at all.  You can always improve on stupid, misguided, pointless efforts, but you can’t improve on anything that you haven’t yet posted on the Internet.

Although this story is true, it was not my first attempt to try and do something.  The one thing that all of my adventure prior to this one had in common was that I ended up with a list of names of people that had at least expressed and interest in whatever it was that I was promoting.  In this case, I had nothing to show for my efforts and knew that I needed to do something to change that in a hurry.

Although I had names from other venture, I never really did anything with those names.  I might send them one email with some great insight that I had. But as far as coming up with something that I was consistently publishing to them on at least a weekly basis, I just did not feel I knew how to get that started.  One of the ways that I was driving traffic to my link was through traffic exchanges, and after seeing Stone Evan’s face and headline at least 700 maybe even 800 times, I decided to read though his sales letter.

There was one thing in his letter that I knew right away that I could use to help me build my business and that was a 400 day prewritten autoresponder, an ezine.  There were a few things about this offer that I really liked.  First, that it would be completely customizable.  Stone Evens says that this ezine has a 3% closing ratio.  Then he talked about how once you have a list, you can come up with other offers that the other 97% might be interested.  The bottom line is, if they are interested in a subscription on home business and Internet marketing, they are going to be buying courses, software, books and other products.  The bottom line is that this helped me put my focus on building my list.  Once you have a good list, you can do surveys and other things to find out what your list feels like they need, and then you can provide it.

Just a quick summery, I have just under 120 people on my list, and 9 people signed up in different affiliate programs I am promoting.  I have probably had about 500 people respond to my ads and marketing.  I have put this all together in about 4 weeks and now have it as a foundation to continue to build on.   There are still things that I did that could be done a lot better, so I can show you how to do even more.

Do You Bring Real Value to Your List?

When I first started marketing online, one of the things that I was taught by my mentor at the time, Ann Sieg, was that one of the best marketing techniques and online relationship building techniques was to give away valuable information?  What?  Did you read that right?  Yes, it is the value that you bring to your customers, or potential customer that will open up more opportunities for you to build your list and grow your business.

Here is an example that I heard early on in my sales career that I think illustrates this best.  Let’s imagine a typical sales call where you go out and meet with a potential client to learn more about them and to give them a chance to learn more about you.  At the end of the first call, you find out that they are definitely going to be buying your product or service, but they are in the early stages of their process and it will be at least a year before they make any buying decisions.

Now, if you were a typical sales person, you would have noticed the big fish on the wall just to the right when you walked into the owner’s office.  Being the master sales person that you were taught to be, you would say, “Wow, that’s a beauty, did you catch that?”  And the owner would tell you that he did, and that it was a long time ago, and that he keeps meaning to take that thing down.

Now if you were a not so typical sales rep, you would have found out how the owner got into this business, what some of his biggest problems were, who some of his strategic partners were, and what some of his long term goals for the business are.

One of the key factors in getting this account would be in building a relationship in the follow up over the next year.  The typical sales rep would call every two weeks and say, “Hey mister business owner, how’s it going?  You still have that big fish on your wall?  How are things moving forward with your decision making process?  Good, good, you don’t mind if I continue to check in with you do you, just doing my job you know?”  And the owner would say that would be fine and you would get off of the phone.  Now imagine getting this exact same call 24 times over the next year.  How much would you look forward to this call, and how fast would you get back to this person if they left you a message?

Let’s take a look at what the not so typical sales rep did for that same year.  He read a lot of business journals and did regular research online learning more about the company, their partners and there competition.  As he ran across something that was particularly interesting, he would cut it out, or write down the URL and send it to the business owner and follow up a week later asking if the owner received it and ask him if had heard that, or what he thought about it, or he might ask him if that has any impact on his business?  Now imagine getting this information and call 20 or so times over the next year.

At the end of the year, who do you think got the business?  Why?  If you answered the typical sales rep, then I would not quite my day job if I were you.  If you see that by bringing real value to the business owner you build both a professional and personal relationship and you see how that would build trust, you are well on your way in building your business.  Remember, people only do business with people they feel they can trust, and if a person show a real interest in you, your business, it’s future, and supplies valuable information in the process, he wins.
